synopsis

 

ANTON DE KOM (1898–1945) was a Surinamese anti-colonialist author. This film looks at his life, from his time in his native land to his exile in The Netherlands – where he wrote his classic tome, We Slaves of Suriname – to his arrest and death in Nazi Germany. The film also movingly recounts de Kom’s marriage and family life.

Director

Ida Does is an independent documentary filmmaker and producer who resides in Holland and Aruba. She has a long history in media and has directed several TV series and documentaries. Does, who is originally from Suriname, was also the compiler of the Caribbean film programme of the International Festival Writers Unlimited in the Hague.
